We’re All in the Same Boat

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.

Romans 3:23-24 NLT

Comparison is one of the most deceptive of human traits.  We compare possessions like cars, homes, and clothing.  We compare our children, activities, vacations, and jobs.  Comparison is the genesis of envy and jealousy.  Perhaps this is why the 10th commandment says, “Don’t covet anything of your neighbor’s.”

News Flash!!!  There is nothing of comparison in God’s eyes.  He doesn’t compare you to anybody else- not  your brother, sister, friend, or enemy.  You stand before God alone.  You can’t point your finger at somebody worse than you, and He won’t point the finger at somebody better than you.

The only measuring stick God uses is His own.  He is the only one to whom we are compared.  Mother Teresa is evaluated this way, and the worst of tyrants is too.

Let me illustrate.  If we all line up on the shore of the California coastline with the goal of reaching Hawaii by swimming the Pacific Ocean, guess what, nobody is going to make it.  Some will perish a few yards into the sea, while others might swim an impressive number of miles.  The result is the same, all would expire thousands of miles away from the glorious destination.

Paul tells us here that we are all sinners in need of a Savior, and His name is Jesus.  He is the safe passage.  He is the boat that takes us all the way to God’s presence.

I don’t mind at all if you’re in the same boat as I am.
