Thousands of Angels
Don’t you realize that I could ask my Father for thousands of angels to protect us, and he would send them instantly?
Matthew 26:53 NLT
“He could have called 10,000 angels, But He died alone for you and me…”
Ten Thousand Angels, Ray Overholt 1958
These words, from a hymn from my childhood, have remained in my spirit for over 50 years now. The choice Jesus made in sacrificing Himself for you and me was not made because He had no options. It was made out of love for the Father, and His great love for mankind. He did of course have the right to bail out. The Word says that God would have sent legions of angels to rescue Jesus if that is what He wanted. But Jesus knew that there was only one way to legitimately provide salvation for the human race, and that of course was to fulfill the requirements of righteousness. Still, it is beyond comprehension that the Lord embraced such a harsh pathway just for us.
What hard choices are you facing? Is the Lord asking you to love and support somebody that has not been particularly kind to you? Are you struggling with being honest in your business practices when you know the only way to get ahead is to “play hardball”? How will you demonstrate unconditional love to your ‘knucklehead’ relative?
The greatest demonstration of strength and love is not when it’s easy, but when it takes all your composure to do the right thing.
Maybe the drops of blood off Jesus’ face in the Garden of Gethsemane reflected the intense internal and very human struggle involved when He had to override His flesh in order to do God’s will.
God would never blame you for bailing out on certain issues, but on the other hand, victory is never won by stopping short of the goal.
